GTA 5 takes more than half of September's total retail dollars, NPD reports

GTA 5 accounted for more than half of all U.S. retail video game dollars in the month of September, according to the NPD Group. The title, which managed to bring in $1 billion just three days after its Sept. 17 release, led a 27 percent growth in total industry sales (totaling $1.079 billion) over Sept. 2012.

In a distant second and third were Madden NFL 25 and NBA 2K14 respectively, and the PS3/Xbox 360 version of Diablo 3--Blizzard's first console game in more than a decade--took the four spot.

Nintendo confirmed in a release that 3DS remained the top-selling system for its fifth month in a row, while PlayStation 3 was the top-selling home console. The coup over longstanding home console king Xbox 360 was largely thanks to its exclusive GTA 5 bundle, NPD analyst Liam Callahan said.

Wii U's September sales more than doubled those of August thanks to a $50 price cut and Wind Waker HD bundles, Nintendo reported. It did not provide specific sales figures.

September U.S. Retail Sales

1. Grand Theft Auto V (360, PS3)
2. Madden NFL 25 (360, PS3)
3. NBA 2K14 (360, PS3, PC)
4. Diablo III (360, PS3, PC)
5. FIFA 14 (360, PS3, Vita)
6. Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX (PS3)
7. Disney Infinity (360, Wii, PS3, Wii U, 3DS)

Long before that, I started pursuing my degree in video games by bugging my older brother to let me play Zelda on the Super Nintendo. I've previously been a news intern for GameSpot, a news writer for CVG, and now I'm a staff writer here at GamesRadar.
