If you were hoping more footage from the Ghost in the Shell movie would assuage your fears about its quality, well, take a look at this and see how you feel:
I gotta say, I'm not a fan. And I really wanted to be! But, okay, first of all, that spin is impossible. And I don't mean in a "nobody flies through the air when they get punched" way, I mean that the direction of his spin changes - twice! Then Scarlett Johansson emerges from her cloaking mode and the city behind her looks flat and not in proper focus. I'm also not sure what she's wearing there - is that an optical camouflage suit or her full-body prosthetic? Either way, I'd say it looks a bit cheap.
Now, some of this is likely due to editing and the early nature of the film's production. The air-flips, while jarring to me, might not stand out as much in the final film, and it does create a cool sense of power to the Major's punch. Similarly, the visual effects could be tweaked so that there's not so much of a "green screen effect" on Johansson.
Win me back, Ghost in the Shell. You can do it. Please?
Directed by Rupert Sanders and starring Scarlett Johansson, Pilou Asbaek, Michael Pitt, Takeshi Kitano, Juliette Binoche, Kaori Momoi, and Chin Han, Ghost in the Shell will be released in cinemas on March 31, 2017.
