How to change appearance in Monster Hunter Wilds
You can change your Hunter and Palico's appearance in Monster Hunter Wilds, and there's a way to do it once for free

The Monster Hunter Wilds change appearance option lets you alter how your Hunter and Palico look, but it's locked behind premium vouchers. If you played MH World or Rise, this system shouldn't be much of a surprise to see in Monster Hunter Wilds but it's still disappointing to see. Buying and using these vouchers isn't especially clear either, but there is a way you can get one character and palico edit voucher for free, so I've laid out how to change you appearance in Monster Hunter Wilds below.
How to change your character appearance in Monster Hunter Wilds
To be able to change appearance in Monster Hunter Wilds you need a premium microtransaction known as a Character Edit Voucher or a Palico Edit Voucher. Ordinarily, you must buy these vouchers via your platform's store, but all players can claim one of each voucher for free! Look on the store and you should see a one-time voucher you can download at no cost.
It's also important to know that some aspects of your character and Palico can be changed for free using the Appearance Menu in your camp tent, including things like your Hunter's hair, facial hair, and makeup. We've explained how this works further below, so you do not buy a voucher if you just want to change your style a little bit!
However, if you want to make substantial changes changes, and have used your one-time free voucher, buying more with real money is sadly your only option, and they only come in bundles of three:
- Character Edit Voucher: Three-Voucher Pack = $6.99/£5.79
- Palico Edit Voucher: Three-Voucher Pack = $6.99/£5.79
- Character & Palico Edit Voucher: Three-Voucher Pack = $9.99/£7.99
However you get them, one-time freebie or not, here's how you go about using edit vouchers in Monster Hunter Wilds to change your character's appearance:
- From the game's main menu, select "start game".
- Hover the cursor over the character/save file you wish to change the appearance of.
- Press "Edit Character" (Square on PS5 controller).
- Choose whether you want to edit your Hunter or your Palico's appearance (If you don't have a relevant voucher, these options cannot be selected).
You'll then be brought to the character creation screen to redo the experience as you did at the start of the game. Be aware that vouchers are only spent when you save the character you're editing, so you can actually go into character creation and back out if you decide you don't want to change things. Although, that does mean you may have bought a voucher for nothing.
If you played the MH Wilds beta before launch, you can import your characters from the beta, so hopefully you made the most of the free and unlimited character edits to make the best Hunters and Palicos. That'll help you get right into the action and is one less thing to worry about while you master all the best Monster Hunter Wilds weapons.
How to change appearance in Monster Hunter Wilds without vouchers
As mentioned above, you can make some style changes to your Hunter character in Monster Hunter Wilds by visiting your tent. This includes changing your:
- Hair, Eyebrows and Facial hair
- Voice pitch
- Eye Color
- Bearing (aka walking animations)
- Voice Pitch (but not the voice itself)
- Clothing and Underclothes
- Makeup and face paint
- Palico cosmetics and fur
Of course, there are also plenty of options for changing your Monster Hunter Wilds armor appearance, but here's how you use your tent for further cosmetic changes:
- Go inside the Main Tent in the Hunter's Base Camp.
- Scroll to the rightmost tab in the menu.
- Select the "change appearance" option.
Make sure you use these free appearance changing options in Monster Hunter Wilds before buying a voucher as you might be able to rescue your character's look without spending money. However, if you really need to edit facial or body features but don't want to start an entirely new game, then vouchers will be your only option.
