Dragon Age Veilguard class guide and the best classes to use

The best class in Dragon Age Veilguard of all the classes is probably the Warrior, but that doesn't mean that the Rogue and the Mage can't tear things up on the battlefield. Each one has meant to fulfil a certain niche and live up to a specific kind of fantasy, and they're all incredibly powerful if handled right - but that doesn't mean that certain classes in Dragon Age The Veilguard don't have an edge, especially for new players who might still be getting used to the systems involved.

With that in mind, we've put together this guide to the best classes in Veilguard, including a tier list, an explanation of each class, and more besides. You can't change your class later on, so it's best to understand what you're getting into before you commit - and with that in mind, let's get classy.

All classes in Dragon Age Veilguard ranked

Having played and compared them, we'd say that the best class in Dragon Age Veilguard is the Warrior, though it's a close competition:

  1. Warrior: A highly durable and surprisingly versatile class, the Warrior offers great damage and keeps things simple, making it ideal for newcomers.
  2. Rogue: Similarly effective on the battlefield compared to the Warrior, but the Rogue is a little more complex, with a strong focus on speed and agility.
  3. Mage: Can be very powerful, particularly in terms of crowd control, but is easily the most complex class, requiring players to make good use of spells and elemental effects. Overall that means the Mage the least accessible class and is harder to recommend.

While you can't change class mid-playthrough (unlike the ability to change appearance in Dragon Age Veilguard), you can freely refund your skill points and respec into different specializations, so if you don't like one playstyle for your chosen class, you can always try something else.

For the Warrior class, it gains another advantage there in that its three specializations are actually pretty distinct and cover different elements of combat nicely. Likewise, the focus on Physical and Stagger damage over elemental powers might leave you at a disadvantage when it comes to exploiting certain enemy vulnerabilities, but Stagger is effectively the weakness that ALL enemies share.

There are three classes in Dragon Age Veilguard, and you earn skills points to spend on the skill tree by levelling up with XP. As you carve a path through the skill tree, you'll unlock passive bonuses, extra benefits, and new abilities. Just like your Dragon Age Veilguard companions, you're limited to just three active abilities, but you can swap these out freely too.

Each class also has three specializations that become available when you reach level 20, but since these are also on the skill tree, you must spend skill points to unlock them. Each specialization also has more abilities that unlock at level 30.

  • Warrior: Focuses on melee combat and durability
    • Reaper: Steal health from enemies to restore yourself.
    • Slayer: Two-handed weapons and high damage impacts.
    • Champion: Shield, tanking and resilience - the paladin subclass.
  • Rogue: Focuses on speed, agility, precision and evasion.
    • Duelist: Melee focus, close quarters evasion and parrying.
    • Saboteur: Lay traps and turrets around the battlefield.
    • Veil Ranger: Arcane sniper, focused on the bow.
  • Mage: Focuses on ranged attacks and elemental spellcasting.
    • Death Caller: Necromancer with life drain abilities.
    • Evoker: Ice mage who freezes enemies.
    • Spellblade: Melee wizard with an electrical focus.

Finally, it's worth mentioning that if you pick the Dwarf, the fourth of the Dragon Age Veilguard Lineages, you cannot choose the Mage class - Dragon Age Dwarves can't use magic for lore reasons, so that's a match-up that just isn't an option. Thankfully, there also aren't any class restrictions to bear in mind when it comes to Dragon Age Veilguard romance options either.

Of course, if you want to know what to pick next in character creation, why not look at our pick for the best Dragon Age Veilguard factions for Rook to be a member of?

Dragon Age Veilguard's flexible class skill trees are a welcome feature that even some of the best RPGs don't have. You can read all about our thoughts on BioWare's return to form in our Dragon Age The Veilguard review.
