Game music of the day: Chip n Dale's Rescue Rangers

Game: Chip and Dale's Rescue Rangers

Song: Final level

Composer: Not sure... probably Yoshihiro Sakaguchi?

Above: Final level from Rescue Rangers

As children of the '80s, we at GR have a depressing amount of love for old cartoons - especially those that became NES games to further ensnare our impressionable minds. When both of these worlds collided in a colorful explosion dictated by Capcom, the results were a series of TV tie-in games that were among the best the platform would ever see. Rescue Rangers is certainly one of our favorites, particularly due to its consistently catchy soundtrack.

The above song is from the game's final level, akaZone J. While the rest of the game's music is typical (but well made) gamey stuff,Zone J adds a layer of importance, a hint of finality that hovers over you as you play through the game's last few steps. The action is intense, the jumps are tough, and this song helped make an already kickass game go out with a bang.

Above:Zone A is energetic, hyperactive stuff

Above:Zone F has a '50s swing style to it, and has a strong enough composition that someone could weave it into a top 40 hit

The real question is, which is better - Rescue Rangers or Ducktales? As a show, and then as a game, and then finally as a soundtrack? Both weigh in strong on all three criteria, so choosing a clear winner would be tough. For my money, just deciding right now, I'd say Rescue Rangers as a show and game, then Ducktales as a soundtrack. The Moon, man!
