DC Comics has announced that legendary Batman writer Frank Miller will be penning the final part of The Dark Knight saga, The Dark Knight III: The Master Race. The eight-issue comic periodical will be forged from the creative braintrust of Miller and Wonder Woman writer Brian Azzarello, who together are set to conclude the beloved take on Batman.
The series kickstarted in 1986 with Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns which chronicles the experiences of a 55-year old Bruce Wayne whose dissatisfaction with the state of Gotham leads him back to the cape once more. Since it dropped nearly thirty years ago it’s been celebrated by fans for its gritty take on the iconic character which has largely influenced Christopher Nolan and Zack Snyder’s cinematic interpretations of Batman.
That initial story was followed in 2001 by a sequel, Batman: The Dark Knight Strikes Again, which wasn’t quite as warmly received.
“Batman remains my favorite comic book hero and a sequel to Dark Knight is going to be daunting," said Miller of the forthcoming project, "but we’ll do our best.” Likewise, his creative partner echoed those sentiments. “It's been an amazing experience collaborating with Frank these past six months,” said Azzarello. “I think we have an epic story that these characters truly deserve.”
The Dark Knight III: The Master Race is expected to hit newsstands later this year.
