Roland Emmerich is swapping out the action-packed spectacles that have defined his career to tell an intimate portrait of gay life during the 1960s in Stonewall. A fictionalised retelling of the infamous Stonewall Inn riots, the movie follows a small clutch of the New York City LGBT community as they rise up against a world that refuses to accept them.
Jeremy Irvine stars as Danny, a young gay man who uproots to the big city after struggling to find acceptance in his hometown. He is welcomed into the Greenwich Village gay community who introduce him to a world unlike any he's known. Little does he know that his activities would become part of a major event in human history. Check out the trailer below:
It's hard to believe that the film hails from Roland Emmerich, who's typically more at home blasting aliens than demonstrating the weightiness of true human drama. As a civil rights document, Stonewall arrives during a pivotal year for gay rights and bears all the hallmarks of a significant Hollywood big-hitter; heart-wrenching content and a likeable cast. Stonewall hits US theaters on September 25, with no as-yet confirmed UK release. Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Ron Perlman and Joey King co-star.
