First Star Wars: Rogue One image lands and it's kinda dark

As part of LucasFilm’s panel at D23 this weekend, the first image was revealed from the forthcoming series of Star Wars spin-offs. What’s more, the official title of said spin-off now appears to be Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Not quite as catchy as Star Wars: Rogue One, but hey, let's go with it.

The new image shows the film’s core cast as a pretty badass looking ensemble, with Felicity Jones’ resistance fighter standing front and centre. She’s joined by Riz Ahmed, Diego Luna and a pair of newly-announced cast members in the form of Jiang Wen and Donnie Yen.

They’re not the only new additions to proceedings, with Mads Mikkelsen newly confirmed in a supporting role alongside Alan Tudyk, who will be playing a motion-capture character. Ben Mendelsohn has also been officially confirmed, having long been rumoured to be playing a major role in the film.

Rogue One will chart the story of Jones’ band of rebels, who plan to launch a daring mission to steal the plans for the Death Star. Directed by Gareth Edwards, the film will open in the US and UK on December 16, 2016.
