Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn classes and jobs guide

Switching Classes

Switching classes in Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn is very simple, but you can't do it immediately. If you decide you no longer like your starting class, you'll have to play until you complete your first Level 15 quest. Alternatively, you could just make a new character, but as you'll learn in the next section of this guide, switching classes is actually necessary for specializing in your preferred classes.

Once that Level 15 quest is complete, you'll unlock airship travel. Using this, you'll be able to easily reach the game's three chief cities: Gridania, Limsa Lominsa, and Ul'Dah.

To switch classes, simply head to the city where that class' guild lies. Head to the guild, and speak to the receptionist and guild master. After a short quest, you'll be given that class' weapon and begin playing as that class. The guild locations are as follows:

  • Gladiator: southwest central Ul'Dah
  • Pugilist: northwest central Ul'Dah
  • Marauder: north Limsa Lominsa, Lower Decks
  • Lancer: east Old Gridania
  • Archer: east New Gridania
  • Conjurer: southwest Old Gridania
  • Thaumaturge: southwest Ul'Dah
  • Arcanist: west Limsa Lominsa, Lower Decks

Once you have initially switched classes, you'll be in possession of different types of weapons. To switch between classes, simply switch weapons. As you're about to learn, working in more than one class is actually necessary for truly mastering a single class.

Choosing Jobs

Jobs allow you to specialize you character. While they're not required, jobs open up additional skills and abilities, all of which are massive improvements upon the base classes. We strongly recommend it.

To unlock a job, you must level your character to a certain combination of levels of two classes and complete a quest. For the specifics of each job and how to get it, keep reading.
