This Final Fantasy 7 Remake wasn't the first one pitched

The announcement of Final Fantasy 7 Remake at E3 2015 seemed like a dream come true; finally, fans would get the Final Fantasy 7 HD version they had so longed for. But as it turns out, it's not just fans that had wanted to get the project off the ground for some time now. Tetsuya Nomura, character designer of the original Final Fantasy 7 and FF7 Remake director, told Weekly Famitsu (as translated by Kotaku) that he himself had tried to get the ball rolling.

"Actually, quite a while ago, I tried to start up the project [to remake FF7], but at the time it didn’t come to fruition," Nomura said. Square Enix eventually approached Nomura and original game director Yoshinori Kitase about the Final Fantasy 7 Remake we know today. While both men were brought onto the project and offered their thoughts during pre-production, it was Nomura who would take the reins as director - a fact he was not aware of until an internal video circulated around the office.

"One day, as I was checking the internal company presentation video, it said 'Director Tetsuya Nomura' at the end," Nomura told Famitsu. "So I called up Mr. Kitase and said, 'It says that I’m the director for some reason.' To which he replied, 'Of course it does.'" It's not quite clear how the title of director got assigned to Nomura without him knowing (hey, we all miss an email here and there, right?), but Nomura said he is now aware of and well invested in his position.
