Field Ops
Can a real-time strategy shooter work? We investigate...
The option to swap between RTS and FPS perspectives is ever-present, although, if the level we were demoed is representative of the five locations featured in the single-player campaign - including skirmishes in Afghanistan, Manhattan and Cuba - areas will be designed to favour one approach over the other.
Besides - and to possibly counter - the genre-juggling antics of the solo exercise, a variety of multiplayer modes will also be included and will give team-mates the chance to split RTS/FPS duties between them - allowing real-time and first-person fans to fight side-by-side.
We need to see more of Field Ops to discover if there's actually a decent game beneath the RTS/FPS novelty but first impressions are certainly encouraging. However, while the genre-splicing might prove to be well implemented, we're still not entirely convinced that it will successfully manage to appeal rather than alienate.
