FEAR 3 announced … and John Carpenter is coming along

The FEAR franchise (First Encounter Assault Recon) originally exploded onto the gaming scene and received critical acclaim for its intense first-person combat and surreal, mind-f#$@ing horror elements. However, the series lost its momentum with the second release – FEAR 2: Project Origin – gaining little more than ho-hum reviews. But like FEAR’s own undead psychopath Alma, the franchise hasn’t vanished completely; it just licked its wounds until publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment was ready to announce that FEAR 3 is currently under development.

As far as we know, Alma – the seriously disturbed chick who looks like she belongs in a Japanese horror film rather than a western made FPS – has returned along with her two sons Point Man (a genetic super soldier with psychic powers) and Paxton Fettel (another genetic super soldier with psychic powers who was brought back from the grave). Players will be able to take control of either of the two brothers and engage in a new cooperative play mechanic, as well as utilize a newly evolved cover system.

The most exciting news is that Day 1 Studios and Monolith are currently developing the game in collaboration with horror director John Carpenter (The Thing, Halloween) and comic/scriptwriter Steve Niles (30 Days of Night). These two horror gods are going to aid the development team in providing the most terrifying experience possible. Considering that the horror elements are what truly defined this franchise from the start, this is damn good news.
