There are a lot of new Star Wars movies and TV shows heading our way over the next few years. Disney has already released five major Star Wars movies, two seasons of The Mandalorian, a season of The Clone Wars, and started The Bad Bath series – and there's plenty more where those came from.
There are a few movies that have officially been confirmed that we'll get into first, like Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron, which is coming in 2023. Then there are some more vague (but no less exciting) reports of upcoming Star Wars features from directors like Taika Waititi and Rian Johnson.
After that, we'll crack onto upcoming Disney Plus shows, from live-action to animation to anime. It seems like all our favorite characters are heading to the small screen, including Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka Tano. Star Wars: Rogue Squadron is coming in 2023
Release date: December 22, 2023
After what felt like an eternity of waiting, Disney finally announced who will direct the next Star Wars movie. Wonder Woman 1984 helmer Patty Jenkins will take the reigns on the movie due for release in 2023, titled Star Wars: Rogue Squadron
In a video coinciding with the announcement, Jenkins talked up her history with the Air Force and her desire to create the "greatest fighter pilot movie ever".
"The story will introduce a new generation of starfighter pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing, high-speed thrill-ride, and move the saga into the future era of the galaxy," reads the official synopses.
Nothing else is yet known about Rogue Squadron but the name will be familiar to many. It is the title of an iconic series of video games that centered around Rebel pilots fighting back against the Empire.
Location scouting took place in Scotland on a Star Wars movie, though that was previously thought to be regarding Taika Waititi's movie. Jenkins has also revealed that the story treatment for Rogue Squadron is almost finished. “We're finishing the treatment, basically, which is pretty big," she said.
"So it ends up being like where you're fairly close to a well-along screenplay by the time I'm done with the treatment in my process. So yeah, we've been working on it for a while. It's going great. I'm super excited about it.” Whatever the case, things are certainly underway on the next Star Wars adventure coming to the big screen.
Jenkins was not the first person in line to direct the next Star Wars movie. Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were originally meant to spearhead a trilogy but were reportedly too busy making shows for Netflix after signing a nine-figure deal with the streaming service in 2019.
There had been rumors that the upcoming movie would be set a few hundred years before the first movie in the prequels, in the time of the Old Republic. The obvious source of inspiration here could be the Knights of the Old Republic video game series – and while Rogue Squadron won't tell that story, perhaps another of the following filmmakers' movies will.
Taika Waititi's Star Wars movie
Release date: Potentially December 19, 2025, or December 17, 2027
Taika Waititi will direct an upcoming Star Wars movie, co-written with Krysty Wilson-Cairns, who helped script the Oscar-nominated 1917 and Edgar Wright's Last Night in Soho.
No other details have yet been announced other than the movie will be heading to cinemas. Indeed, there's no release date, though Disney has two Star Wars movies penciled in the calendar – one for December 2025 and one for 2027. Chances are, Waititi's movie will be one of those.
"Taika’s approach to Star Wars will be fresh, unexpected, and…unique," Kathleen Kennedy said. "His enormous talent and sense of humor will ensure that audiences are in for an unforgettable ride."
Taika will have a lot on his plate in the meantime. The director is currently working on Thor: Love and Thunder, which will release in 2022, and a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory animated series for Netflix.
Rian Johnson’s new Star Wars movie trilogy

The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson must have impressed someone at Lucasfilm and Disney because, just before Star Wars: The Last Jedi hit cinemas, they announced that the filmmaker would be heading up a brand new Star Wars movie trilogy featuring "new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored." And even though The Last Jedi was, shall we say, divisive among the Star Wars faithful, Johnson's still on board, the filmmaker has previously taken to Twitter to respond to rumors the project had been abandoned and various reports in 2021 signaling the project is still happening.
We don't know very much about this new Star Wars movie trilogy, but Johnson will write and direct the first entry. He's previously spoken about the pitch that got him the job and, just to warn you, there's not much to it: "One story told over three movies. Go new places, meet new folks, come up with a new story to tell in the Star Wars universe. The sky’s the limit…" Considering how fresh The Last Jedi felt, we couldn't be more excited to see Johnson let loose in the Star Wars galaxy. Before then, though, you will be able to enjoy Johnson's Knives Out trilogy – yes, there are two more coming – on Netflix.
Kevin Feige's Star Wars movie

Marvel mastermind Kevin Feige has reportedly been brought on board to help shape the future of Star Wars. Disney co-chairman Alan Horn said in a statement: "We are excited about the projects Kathy and the Lucasfilm team are working on… With the close of the Skywalker Saga, Kathy is pursuing a new era in Star Wars storytelling, and knowing what a die-hard fan Kevin is, it made sense for these two extraordinary producers to work on a Star Wars film together."
Feige, meanwhile, has apparently approached a "major actor" about a role in the upcoming unnamed Star Wars movie, according to one source close to The Hollywood Reporter. The movie may even lead to a larger position working within LucasFilm for the producer.
Little else is known about the movie and Feige's role at LucasFilm – though expect more reports to emerge over the next few years. Could he pick up where Benioff and Weiss left off? We wouldn't put it past LucasFilm to hand Feige the reigns to a post-Rise of Skywalker trilogy.
J.D. Dillard's Star Wars movie

Reports emerged in February 2020 that J.D. Dillard – best known for the film Sleight – is working on a feature-length project with Luke Cage and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. scribe Matt Owens. The Hollywood Reporter first announced the news, with Deadline claiming that the movie would be set on the Sith planet Exegol (though the accuracy of the setting has been questioned). Neither publication was able to confirm whether the movie would debut in cinemas or on Disney Plus. Little else is known about the project, other than it's unrelated to Feige's pitch.
Any more Star Wars Story movies?

The original plan, when Disney bought LucasFilm for upwards of $4 billion, was to release standalone "Anthology" movies between all the new "Saga" Episodes. That meant the two-year gaps between The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker were to be punctuated by Rogue One and Solo – and at one point it looked like there'd be a third Star Wars Story after The Rise of Skywalker. Then the relatively disappointing box office performance of Solo prompted Disney to rethink the strategy and put the spin-offs on hold, and then that turned into the company pivoting to Disney Plus.
Solo’s conclusion was clearly setting up a sequel. There were also multiple reports concerning a standalone new Star Wars movie centered on Boba Fett, first with Fantastic Four director Josh Trank at the helm, and after that(according to reports that were never confirmed by Disney) Logan's James Mangold. However, this morphed into The Mandalorian and, later, Fett's own spin-off show.
The other frontrunner for a standalone movie was Obi-Wan Kenobi. Indeed, there were various (similarly unconfirmed) reports (one apparently leaking the synopsis) that Disney/Lucasfilm had an Obi-Wan project in the works with Billy Elliot director Stephen Daldry attached. Like the Boba Fett solo movie, the Obi-Wan spin-off has also changed into something new: a Disney Plus spin-off series telling the tale of the wise Jedi Knight between Episodes III and IV. The Mandalorian season 3
Release date: Seasons 1 and 2 streaming now, season 3 expected in 2022
Before the first season of The Mandalorian reached Disney Plus, we had confirmation that season 2 was being developed. Then, months before season 2 started, a third season was announced. However, when exactly The Mandalorian season 3 will arrive is unknown – we were expecting the show to be released in December 2021, but another Star Wars spin-off now has that date: The Book of Boba Fett. Showrunner Jon Favreau has confirmed Mandalorian will return soon after Boba, indicating that Din Djarin will be back in early 2022.
The Book of Boba Fett
Release date: December 2021
Boba Fett returned in The Mandalorian season 2 with a bang, smashing a few Stormtrooper heads and then helping Din Djarin on his quest to get Baby Grogu back from Moff Gideon. During the post-credits to the season, Boba returned with Fennec Shand, the pair killing off the survivors of Jabba's barge.
With that scene also came the announcement of The Book of Boba Fett, a new spin-off show that will debut on Disney Plus. The series also got a December 2021 release date, which was believed to be when The Mandalorian would return. It has since been confirmed that The Book of Boba Fett will come before The Mandalorian season 3, with the Boba series – also set in The Mandalorian timeline – going into production first.
Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, and Robert Rodriguez will act as showrunners, Rodriguez having previously directed Chapter 14, "The Tragedy", which re-introduced Boba Fett properly back into the Star Wars universe. Temuera Morrison (Fett) and Ming-Na Wen (Fennec Shand) are both confirmed to appear in the series.
Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney Plus series
Release date: 2022
Hello there! Just a week before Disney's bi-annual D23 expo in 2019, reports emerged that an Obi-Wan Kenobi TV show was on the way, with Ewan McGregor back as the Jedi Master. At the event, McGregor joined Kathleen Kennedy on stage to confirm that yes, finally, he would be returning to the iconic role in a new series.
The Scottish actor hasn’t played Obi-Wan Kenobi on-screen since 2005’s Revenge of the Sith – although he made a brief return in a voice cameo during Rey’s vision in The Force Awakens. The same goes for Hayden Christensen, who will return as Darth Vader for the series (see the full cast here). The rivals will come to blows, it has been confirmed.
"The fans have been waiting long enough," McGregor said during Disney's colossal investors' call. Deborah Chow, who will act as showrunner and direct the episodes, revealed the series will take place 10 years after Revenge of the Sith. "This is quite a dark time that we're coming into with him, just being a Jedi – it's not safe," she said. "There's Jedi hunters out there."
"The most beautiful thing of all is that it's brought me back together with Hayden," McGregor added. "It'll be amazing to bring those characters back together again, very unexpectedly. Having another swing at each other might be quite satisfying for everybody. We hope that you enjoy it as much as we're going to enjoy making it."
Rogue One spin-off Andor
Release date: TBA
A little less high profile, but still noteworthy nonetheless. There's a Rogue One prequel coming to Disney Plus, with Diego Luna reprising his role as Rebel Alliance spy Cassian Andor and Alan Tudyk returning as the droid K-2SO. The new series is being billed as “a rousing spy thriller will explore tales filled with espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire.”
Tony Gilroy, who took over directing duties of Rogue One from Gareth Edwards during production, created the new series. Stellan Skarsgård, Adria Arjona, Fiona Shaw, Denise Gough, Kyle Soller and Genevieve O’Reilly as Mon Mothma have all joined the cast.
Ahsoka
Release date: Unknown
Having stunned in The Mandalorian, Rosario Dawson's live-action version of Ahsoka Tano is getting a spin-off series. Written by Dave Filoni and with Jon Favreau acting as co-executive producer, the series will likely continue Ahsoka's search for Thrawn. However, plot specifics are being kept to a minimum, though there was confirmation the series will take place during The Mandalorian timeline.
Rangers of the New Republic
Release date: Unknown
Speaking at Disney's investors call in 2020, Disney CEO Bob Iger teased the potential for spin-offs from the Star Wars spin-off show, The Mandalorian. Then, in December 2020, Rangers of the New Republic was announced, with executive producers Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni taking on the series, which will likewise take place during The Mandalorian timeline. No specifics were mentioned, but the series "will intersect with future stories and culminate into a climactic story event".
Fans were expecting Gina Carano's Cara Dune to appear in the series, but she has since been removed from all future Star Wars projects. Reports have also signaled that work on Rangers of the New Republic has come to a halt.
Lando
Release date: Unknown
Everyone wants to see more of Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian. However, whether Glover will return as the character remains unclear, though Calrissian will return in his own show, simply titled Lando. Justin Simien, creator of Dear White People, will act as showrunner. Lando is in the early stages of developing the project.
The Acolyte
Release date: Unknown
A week after The Mandalorian season 3 entered development, news emerged that a "female-centric" new Star Wars series is being worked on, with Leslye Headland – the co-creator and executive producer of the Netflix series Russian Doll – on board as showrunner. Sources revealed at the time that the series "takes place in a different part of the Star Wars timeline than other projects" and now, thanks to the huge Disney investors' call, we know that to be true.
"The Acolyte is a mystery-thriller that will take viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era," reads the official synopses. The High Republic era is around 350 years before The Phantom Menace, and this will be the first time that period is explored on screen.
A Droid Story

This one's a little different. Lucasfilm Animation and Lucasfilm’s visual effects team, Industrial Light & Magic are teaming up for a Disney Plus movie, A Droid Story. "This epic journey will introduce us to a new hero, guided by legendary duo R2-D2 and C-3PO," read the synopses. Well, anything with our two favourite droids in will be worth a watch, so we can't wait to see how this will look!
Star Wars: Visions
Release date: Unknown
Star wars anime? It's never been done! Should it be done? The jury's out. Star Wars: Visions will be "a series of animated short films celebrating Star Wars through the lens of the world’s best anime creators," according to the synopses. "The anthology collection will bring 10 fantastic visions from several of the leading Japanese anime studios, offering a fresh and diverse cultural perspective to Star Wars."
Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 2
Release date: TBA
Following a very successful first season, The Bad Batch looks set to return, continuing the adventures of the rogue group of Clone misfits. There's currently no return date for the animated series, giving you more than enough time to catch up on the already-released episodes.
