Fast & Furious 6 has powered to the top of the US box office, one of a clutch of big releases that produced the biggest Memorial Day box office of all time.
The new film took an impressive $98.5 million in its opening weekend, proving that the public’s appetite for souped-up muscle cars is as rabid as ever.
The presence of The Hangover 3 , Star Trek Into Darkness , Iron Man 3 and The Great Gatsby in the top ten meant that this years haul easily surpassed the previous record of $223 million back in 2011, with the final figure yet to be confirmed.
Iron Man 3 ’s continuing presence in the top 10 saw its overall take sail past $1.1 billion, a remarkable performance that will surely increase the chances of a fourth solo outing for Tony Stark.
Meanwhile, Univeral bosses will be thinking that the upcoming seventh Fast & Furious is looking to be an increasingly lucrative proposal…
