Evil Dead tops US box-office
Groovy
Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead remake has stormed the US box office, topping the domestic chart on its opening weekend, taking home an impressive $26 million.
That represented a $5m increase on its projected opening, and is impressive business for an R-rated horror movie, even one with such a passionate cult following.
The film comfortably saw off G.I. Joe Retaliation into second place, despite leaving some reviewers cold with its focus on brutal, unrelenting gore rather than the goofy humour seen in the latter installments of Sam Raimi’s series.
Clearly the concentrated publicity campaign seen over the past few months has done its job, with gorehounds queuing up to take on the self-proclaimed “most terrifying film you will ever experience”.
Co-starring Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez and Lou Taylor Pucci, with Raimi and Bruce Campbell on production duties, the film will open in the UK on 12 April 2013. See it if you dare…
