Monster's Ball may be the movie that's put director Marc Forster on the map, but it was actually his third feature. The first, Loungers, is still unreleased, but here's a chance to catch his intriguing sophomore effort.
The underrated Radha Mitchell (High Art, Pitch Black) plays Angie, an expectant mother who's surrounded by supportive friends and a loving husband (Justin Louis). Then she loses her newborn son to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Her hubby tries to soothe her pain but can't find the words. Her friends want to help but they can't find the courage. And Angie? Well, she just wants answers - - and they're the most elusive component of all.
Shot on digital video for the price of a Mars Bar, Everything Put Together occupies a twilight zone between creepy and wanky. It's distractingly arthouse in technique (slow dissolves, blurred pans, eerie slo-mo), but also genuinely disturbing, Angie's incremental paranoia recalling Rosemary's Baby. Recalling, mind you, not matching.
