Apple's App store prepares for the flood
Epic Games is giving iOS developers a shot at making the next Infinity Blade by releasing its updated Epic Unreal Development Kit featuring its Unreal Engine 3 to the public this Thursday.
The tech – which has powered such blockbuster games as Batman: Arkham asylum, Gears of War and Mass Effect - will bestow iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch developers with the tools to make full use of the iOS' graphical capabilities as well as speed up overall development cycles. The download will be made available for free for everyone, however Epic plans to charge developers who sell their creations a $99 licensing fee and 25% in royalties after the first $5,000 in sales.
No doubt, this release will result in a surge of top-tier games for iDevices, making its usage a no-brainer for designers looking toreplicate Epic's tremendous success with Infinity Blade.Speaking to the state of iOS development, Epic co-founder Mark Rein said: “Apple’s App Store is the most vibrant market for mobile gaming. If you’re going to make a game for a mobile device, and you want to make the most money, you’re nuts not to make it for iOS.”
Epic's updated kit will be ready at itsUDK websitestarting Thursday.
