Emily Blunt to play Mary Poppins in Disney sequel?

Emily Blunt has apparently been offered the role of Mary Poppins in a new sequel from Disney, according to reports from Den Of Geek. It was reported this week that Disney is working on a musical sequel to the 1964 film starring Julie Andrews (although the studio is yet to confirm), and now it seems they may have their leading lady.

Anonymous sources have confirmed to the publication that the Edge Of Tomorrow actress has been offered the role of Mary Poppins and is likely to accept. With Into The Woods director, Rob Marshall supposedly leading the new project, it's perhaps unsurprising that Blunt is in the running.

Disney has yet to confirm anything to do with the sequel, but with their recent success with live adaptations, it wouldn't be entirely unsurprising. More unusual is the fact that they've received permission to delve into the other Mary Poppins stories as author, P L Travers notoriously hated Walt Disney's adaptation. See Saving Mr. Banks.

We're waiting to hear from Disney and Emily Blunt's people before we start getting too excited, but we can't think of anyone better to take on this iconic role.
