Edge 282: The story behind Dark Souls III and Miyazaki's magnificent return

An irritation for any developer, pre-announcement leaks must be particularly frustrating for Hidetaka Miyazaki. The man behind Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls and Bloodborne is noted for creating unapologetically enigmatic games and for his mischievous ability to keep secrets. But despite slipping from his grasp for just a moment, Dark Souls III still holds plenty of mystery, and for our cover feature this issue we meet Hidetaka to discuss, on his own terms, what lays in wait. Issue 282 of Edge is available now in print, on iPad, Google Play and Zinio.

Dark Souls III is far from the only big announcement to discuss this month, following one of the most rousing E3’s in recent memory. Our ten-page conference report delivers our verdict on the publisher sessions, big reveals, and buzzing show floor, and we also take time to speak to Shuhei Yoshida and Phil Spencer.

Although it didn’t dominate the conferences, virtual reality had a big presence at this year’s show. In Out Of This World we go hands on with the latest Rift and Morpheus builds, and try Starbreeze’s new StarVR headset, while Virtual Realities sees us gather four VR experts to discuss how the field needs to evolve.

Rather than invite players into game worlds, the toys to life genre is taking a different tack by extending its worlds into ours. In Interaction Figures, we examine how Skylanders, Disney Infinity and Amibo took on toy companies at their own game.

Our The Making Of… this month is Alpha Waves, the first 3D platformer, while our Time Extend is a welcome return to Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence’s jungle. We also manage to squeeze in a trip to Glasgow to visit CGI house Axis Animation, the company behind that Dead Island trailer. Finally, author Ernest Cline talks ET: The Extra Terrestrial and Steven Spielberg in My Favourite Game.

In Hype, we take an in-depth look at The Last Guardian, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Star Wars Battlefront, Metal Gear Sold V: The Phantom Pain, Street Fighter V, Just Cause 3 and Yooka-Laylee.

And in Play, we assess Batman: Arkham Knight, Splatoon, Heroes Of The Storm, Yoshi’s Woolly World, Destiny: House Of Wolves, Magicka 2, Nom Nom Galaxy and Massive Chalice.
