Ed Sheeran's Game of Thrones season 7 cameo sees him sing to Arya
We’ve known for a little while that pop star Ed Sheeran will be making a cameo on Game of Thrones season 7, but now he’s revealed that he’ll be doing what he does best when he appears up on the show: singing.
"I just do a scene with Maisie," Sheeran explained on The Hits Radio (via Digital Spy), referring to Maisie Williams’ tomboy-turned-assassin character Arya Stark. “I sing a song and then she goes, 'oh, that's a nice song'." Sounds like a nice little shout-out to Maisie Williams from the show’s writers, because they know she’s a massive Ed Sheeran fan and have been trying to get him on the show for years. Being able to complement one of her favorite musicians in character on her mega-hit TV show must be a cool thrill for the young actress.
It also sounds like a rare moment of calm for Arya, who spent the past season training at the House of Black and White and - spoiler alert - finally returning to Westeros to exact her revenge on Walder Frey for murdering her mother and brother at the infamous Red Wedding. Sheeran better hope he’s not singing “The Rains of Castamere” anywhere near Arya, or else her compliment might be the last thing his character hears before she sticks him with her trusty sword, Needle. He previously said his character doesn’t die on screen, but there’s always the chance he’s just trying to throw people off the trail in order to surprise fans later on.
Game of Thrones returns to HBO in the US on July 16 and on June 17 on Sky Atlantic in the UK. Check out a spider-heavy fan theory and read why star Kit Harington isn't thrilled with the idea of Jon Snow being the subject of a long-rumored prophecy.
