Ho-Cheung Pang’s novel, textured slasher flick sees puppy-eyed protagonist Li-sheung (Josie Ho) stab and bludgeon her way through a Hong Kong apartment block to lower the price of the flat she’s obsessed with closing a sale on. And you thought the UK was bad.
It’s a split-level movie: on one hand, you have interesting, if woolly, ideas about how defining life in terms of currency and territory dehumanises us.
On the other, there’s the excruciating violence improvised from zip ties, plastic bags and futon slats.
In the end, the two cancel each other to leave a circuitous, curious hybrid.
