A single viewing only scratches the surface of this dazzling montage-based Hitchcock quasi-doc.

Exploring the great director’s own fascination with doubles, Belgian director Johan Grimonprez zaps between Cold War-era archive footage, clips from Alfred Hitchcock Presents and an imaginary encounter between the Master Of Suspense and an older version of himself during the shooting of The Birds.

As well as getting under his subject’s vast skin (with the aid of both lookalikes and soundalikes), Grimonprez offers cultural history lessons: check out the wry illustration of how US coffee ads in the early ’60s helped TV stoke a climate of paranoia.
