Doomsday: Last Survivors launches music video for theme song with Emmy-winning composer Brandon Campbell
Doomsday: Last Survivors has collaborated with composer Brandon Campbell to create an exclusive theme song for the zombie survival strategy game, and is celebrating by launching a music video to accompany it.
In Doomsday: Last Survivors you play as the Commander, responsible for assembling a band of survivors and organising them to build their shelter in a post-apocalyptic near future, while fighting off the ever-present threat of the zombie hordes… and other human factions! Blending elements of online multiplayer with real-time strategy, you'll need to keep your wits about you to help your group survive and thrive.
The game features a graphic novel art style and plays out from an isometric viewpoint, where you guide your group through apocalyptic scenes in search of resources and other survivors to join the cause. As you explore you'll trigger Zombie Alerts, where the gameplay switches to Tower Defense and you need to use strategy to defeat waves of the undead. Build barriers and gun turrets to thin their numbers, then use the Hero skills of special characters who join you – such as the chainsaw-wielding Catherine Calamity – to finish them off.
Between exploring missions you'll be putting those resources to good use, building and upgrading your Shelter to keep your survivors safe. From here you can launch raids on other players' Shelters to secure crucial supplies, and even form alliances with other players to fight against a common enemy together.
To create the game's theme song, Doomsday: Last Survivors collaborated with Brandon Campbell – an Emmy-winning composer who has previously worked on Game of Thrones, Westworld, and Pacific Rim: The Black. In the interview below, Brandon outlines the creative journey he took in order to bring this vision to life.
Brandon has "always had a great passion for the genre", and to create a fitting theme he worked closely with the game development team to get a direct insight into the style and atmosphere they wanted to portray. In the song Brandon created, he tried to balance the conflicting emotions of "dread and fear of this post-apocalyptic, zombie-filled world" with the "emotion and will to survive of the human spirit" to provide hope for the future.
By his own admission, Brandon found writing the song challenging at first due to those two opposing ideas, so had to find the right balance between them. To do this, he started out with some low-key guitars and electronics, before adding in the bass and drums then revisiting the melody to let it grow into the final rock pop track that even features some orchestra elements towards the end.
Those conflicting themes can be found in the lyrics composed by Brandon, which begin with a brooding assessment of the inescapable darkness and decay that envelops the doomsday, before swelling to an uplifting chorus in which the last survivors rise and rebuild to light up the night sky and proclaim they are survivors. You can check out the music video in all its glory below, featuring scenes based on the storyline of Doomsday: Last Survivors.
