Doom release dates confirmed

Just as we were beginning to worry that the Xbox version of Doom 3 and the PC expansion pack, Resurrection of Evil, wouldn't see release for months - following yesterday's news that they had - it's been confirmed today that both games will hit shelves on 4 April.

Until now, we had only a vague idea as to when either game would be released, with developers id maintaining their characteristic "they're ready when they're ready" stance.

The original was released in August and, despite some players disliking the torch/gun swapping mechanism, it was met with a resoundingly positive critical response.

The horror-shooter's adds full Xbox Live multiplayer support and an Xbox exclusive two-player cooperative campaign.

Also included as part of a limited collector's edition are full versions of the original Ultimate Doom and Doom II, both of which will support up to four players in deathmatch and cooperative modes.

Meanwhile, - which has been co-developed by id and Nerve Software - features an "all-new assault on humanity" (or so it says here). Set two years after Doom 3, it features an army of new demons and zombies and a massive arsenal of additional weapons - including the classic double-barrelled shotgun.

Doom 3 for Xbox and Doom 3 Resurrection of Evil for PC will both be released on 4 April
