DivX technology - the magic that makes one of the most popular video formats on the internet work - is officially coming to PS3, and about bloody time, too.
Until now, PS3 users have had to go through thepain of converting all their AVI format videos - which is the format everything seems to come in nowadays - into PS3 compatible video such as MPEG 3. But not when DivX support finally lands.
"Our technology will expand the multimedia functionality of PS3 by enabling users to enjoy access to the broad library of content in the DivX digital media format," said Kevin Hell, CEO of DivX.
"DivX is currently working to certify PS3 and deliver a superior digital media technology to consumers in the near future. Current PS3 end users will be able to add DivX functionality to their systems via a separate system software update at a forthcoming date," explains DivX.
Incorporation of DivX tech also means that developers will also be able to use the DivX format for their games, too.
