Disney Plans Princess Bride Stage Show

Classic 1987 movie could be heading for Broadway

Disney is working on a stage show based on The Princess Bride, according to The Hollywood Reporter . The studio's theatre division (which has already had over $1 billion of success with The Lion King , and has just launched an Aladdin musical) is developing William Goldman's story, though it's yet to be confirmed whether the Broadway show would be a musical or an ordinary stage production.

Goldman, writer of the original 1973 children's book and screenwriter for the 1987 movie, is working on the project. It's not the first time he's tried to take Westley, Princess Buttercup, Count Rugen, Vizzini, Fezzik, Inigo Montoya and, er, Columbo to the stage – he collaborated with composer Adam Guettel on a potential musical a few years back (several songs were written), but the duo reportedly fell out over ownership of the show.
