Denis Leary confirmed for Spider-Man sequels

The Amazing Spider-Man news continues to come thick and fast. This weekend saw Sony confirm an official release date for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 , and cast members are already beginning to pipe up about the long-term future of the franchise.

Denis Leary has been the first to get chatty about the upcoming Spidey sequels, confirming that he will reprise his role as Captain Stacy, father of Emma Stone’s Gwen.

“I guess they officially announced it yesterday,” said Leary to Collider, before going all coy on his character’s physical appearance. “I don’t know if I’m allowed to say. Every time you say something about this fucking movie, they go crazy!”

However, that didn’t stop him dropping a few nuggets about the first film, with Leary enthusing about co-stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone.

“I loved Andrew,” he said, “I really did. He’s terrific in the role. He was trained as a gymnast when he was growing up in England, which came in handy. Most of the stunts in the movie are done live, in front of the cameras. He’s just a terrific actor, and I really loved working with him.”

“Same thing with Emma,” he continued. “They’re actually more mature than I am, so that says a lot. They’re really incredibly talented and really professional. She’s 22 years old! I don’t want to tell you what I was doing when I was 22 years old.”

And while Leary is not much of a Spidey fan himself, he’s clearly been talking to some people who are.

“I’m more of a Batman guy, but I have a good friend, Jeff Garlin, who is a Spider-Man freak, and he said to me, ‘The first time I met you, I thought you were George Stacy!’ That was 30 years ago. He had an old comic book frame on his computer and he showed it to me, and I was like, ‘You’re sick!’ and he was like, 'No, I’m a Spider-Man freak.' People take it very seriously."
