DayZ is coming to Xbox One - so where's that PS4 version?
So here's a weird little tidbit. Hidden in the middle of the Microsoft E3 press conference, among a list of games confirmed for the Xbox Game Preview programme, and sitting a little quietly next to its creator's new game, Ion, was DayZ. The survival game behemoth is coming to Xbox One. Fittingly, for a game that's never quite been finished, it will be an Early Access game here too.
But it begs the question - where's the PS4 version we were talking about last year? So floored were we that Dean Hall's zombie phenomenon was coming to Sony's console, we included it in a list of the most surprising moments of last year's Gamescom. And then, nothing.
Hall has since left DayZ studio, Bohemia, to start the indie studio that's making Ion - perhaps the deal died with his departure. There's also the much-maligned ID@Xbox parity clause, which could be a factor. The agreement that an indie game arriving on Xbox could not appear on a rival platform simultaneously has been the source of much debate.
It's not entirely clear whether DayZ is a part of Microsoft's indie publishing programme (it was lumped in with Preview games, not ID@Xbox games at the show), and no one's entirely sure if the parity clause still truly exists, but perhaps with the shift to Xbox, DayZ was forced to delay its PlayStation equivalent.
Then again, it could pop up at the Sony conference and all will be forgotten. For now, though, consider me infected with intrigue.
