Dark Souls 3 boss guide - how to defeat every top tier enemy

Abyss Watchers

Farron Keep is a treacherous, poisonous place... and when you finally extinguish the tower flames and slog through it, you’ll have to face the keep’s bosses. Yes, that’s plural.

The Abyss Watchers is a group boss, but the fight begins with just one Watcher – and this is the one you need to focus on, as attacking him is the only way to chip away at the health bar at the bottom of the screen. He attacks with an arsenal of stabs, sweeps, and leaps, all of which you should dodge as if you were fighting any other sword-wielding enemy. Backstabbing him will take away a nice chunk of his HP too.

The twist here is that a short time into the fight, a second Watcher will show up. Luckily, he goes down in a just a few hits. Now here’s where it gets interesting: the next Watcher that shows up (look for the red eyes) will target both you and the main boss. You can totally hang back and let them fight each other - on our playthrough, we actually let him finish off the boss for us. This pattern of player-attacking and boss-attacking Watchers will continue until the main Watcher falls.

Then you’ll enter phase two. There’s only one Watcher this time, but his blade will blaze with fire damage. His attacks are the same, but be aware of the added range and damage. If he leaps into the air, back away to avoid the ensuing blast of fire; if he dashes forward along the ground, dodge further to the side then usual, as his path will then erupt with flame. Keep yourself healed and dodge well, and you’ll get through the second half of the fight.

The Abyss Watchers are the first proper Lords of Cinder you have to fight, and it won’t be easy. Luckily, they also fight each other. Let them turn on themselves when possible, and stay nimble during the second stage to come out on top.
