Hands-on with a polished build of Digital Extremes' techno-thriller
Like we said, bad day.
Tenno's "death" is merely a portent to what's to come, administered with the business end of a virus-infected talon plunging right through his right shoulder. As the life slowly ebbs out of him, the virus taking over, color begins to slowly leech into the game world, and after escaping in a massive explosion, Tenno has to come to grips with the fact that his old self is dead, replaced by what looks like a slimy, rotting arm and shoulder as the virus begins to go to work, augmenting him.
The change is more than a physical one, though; as Tenno undergoes his changes, the morally grey character that he was as a CIA cleaner is slowly stripped away too, and it's something that Digital Extremes has worked hard to paint with plenty of cinematic flair. The entire first mission of the game and even parts of the second are meant to be something a tutorial, illustrating though both cutscene and light metaphor that perhaps the world is a little more shaded than originally thought.
Those elements, while significant, are still supportive of the main gameplay, however. Rife with elements from Gears of War and Resident Evil 4, Dark Sector looks like it'll spend just as much time spoon-feeding super-human abilities to Hayden as it will providing plenty of opportunities for heated firefights.
