Dane DeHaan talks about Amazing Spider-Man 2 prep

Dane DeHaan has spoken about his prep for the role as Spidey’s frenemy Harry Osborn in the upcoming sequel, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 .

In a chat with The New York Times , DeHaan revealed that he’s been bulking up to play the character (previously played by James Franco in Sam Raimi’s trilogy).

As a result of DeHaan’s casting, we had presumed that director Marc Webb was aiming for a nerdier, slimmer Osborn Jr. But by the sounds of these latest comments, he could be a match for Andrew Garfield's lithe, toned physique.

On starting work on the sequel, DeHaan said: “Right now it’s just about getting all my work done and bulking up a little bit. I’ll start shooting fairly soon in New York.

“I work out incredibly intensely six days a week and I eat every two hours. Mostly proteins and veggies. I consume at least 3,000 calories a day. I’ve already gained seven pounds in six weeks! I weigh more right now than I’ve ever weighed in my whole life. I’ve always constantly had trouble putting on weight, so it’s actually a whole lot for me.”

Given the character’s potential future (in the comics, he takes the mantle from his father, Norman, to become Green Goblin Mk II), there's been much speculation around if/when he'll go from Peter Parker's friend to Spider-Man's sworn enemy.

Right now, it’s unclear whether he’ll be going to the dark side in the sequel. That arc might be being reserved for later in the rebooted franchise. Given the abundance of villains on the cast list of Part 2 - Jamie Foxx is Electro, Paul Giamatti’s probably Rhino - we’d plump for the latter at this point.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens in the UK on 18 April 2014.
