Getting your hands on genuinely good DnD gifts (whether it's for players or your group's Dungeon Master) can be a quest in and of itself. There's no shortage of choice, so where in the Nine Hells should you start?
Because the 12DOVE team and I are big fans of Dungeons & Dragons books, we embarked on an adventure to find the best DnD gifts. You can find our top recommendations below, and there should be something to suit all budgets here – you don't need to spend a fortune on your journey for quality presents. They'll delight online and in-person players alike, too.
Wondering how we settled on these options? The team and I have spent a long time suggesting gifts for gamers and even longer playing DnD, so we won't ever recommend something we wouldn't want ourselves. If we've not been hands-on with a product, we've also cross-referenced user-reviews to make sure you're not winding up with tat.
Benjamin runs all of the 12DOVE gifting content, and he's been writing about present-worthy goods for around six years. He's a longtime Dungeon Master himself, and is currently taking other staff-members through the (excellent) Curse of Strahd campaign.
Best DnD gifts overall
There's a lot to choose from when it comes to DnD gifts, so I've narrowed things down here to save you time. If you're looking for the best presents, I'd point you at these first.
Best overall
You can't go wrong with a new set of dice. In fact, it's probably your safest bet in terms of DnD gifts. From my experience, players and Dungeon Masters alike are always up for more bones they can roll. While there are numerous places you can go to grab a set, these handsome metal variants from Amazon glow in the freakin' dark. That's an awesome party trick which elevates them above the rest.
Best mug
Want to keep costs down but still roll good DnD gifts? This tavern-style mug is a solid bet both figuratively and literally (seriously, get a load of that hefty design). It screams 'Dungeons & Dragons' thanks to the wooden construction, and can carry 20oz of your favorite drink. Although it won't stand up to lots of punishment, it's a fun novelty that'll raise immersion in any session.
Best novelty
Themed cookbooks are always a great present, so this Dungeons & Dragons tome is perfect if you're seeking out quirky DnD gifts. As well as being crammed with fun recipes based on the tabletop world, it has different options revolving around the game's various species – there are elven breads, drow delicacies, and more. Perfect for game night snacks.
Best toys
These soft toys from Wizkids are adorable takes on DnD's best-known monsters, and they're of an impressive quality as well. I've been hands-on with more than a few and they all make great desk-buddies. My personal favorites would be the Beholder or Owlbear, both available at Amazon. They're the game's most iconic foes and have oodles of personality here.
Best collectible
One of the best and most thoughtful DnD gifts available would have to be a custom miniature, and no-one does it better than HeroForge. You can customize everything about the model down to its pose and accessories. What's more, it can be shipped blank, in full color, or as a 2D standee. If you have a 3D printer, you could even print the miniature yourself.
Best t-shirt
Stranger Things has done a lot to raise awareness of DnD, so a replica of the show's DnD club shirt is a great gift overall. Besides being screen-accurate, this is incredibly comfortable with a design that doesn't feel cheap or tacky. In other words, it's a present the recipient can wear with pride to their next session.
Best DnD gifts under $30
Looking for cheap DnD gifts that are still of a high quality? These recommendations will serve well as stocking fillers or Secret Santa presents.
Best t-shirts
T-shirts are always a reliable gift, so long as you get the right size - they're a practical yet inexpensive way for the recipient to show off their fandom. More than a few are available, of course, but I'd make a beeline for Amazon and the unisex Baldur's Gate resort tee along with the many class shirts, like this Druid design.
Best cheap
If keeping costs down is at the top of your agenda, novelty mugs fit the bill. Besides being pretty affordable on the whole, most will suit either Dungeon Masters or players. I'm a big fan of the 'Sarcasm +5' cup on Amazon thanks to its simple but funny design, along with the thematically-fitting barrel beer mug.
Most practical
Want a surefire hit? Get a DnD player or Dungeon Master new dice. It doesn't matter whether they have loads already; as any fan will tell you, there's no such thing as 'too many dice.' While you're spoilt for choice at Amazon, my favorites would be these cute cat dice or this surprisingly high-quality bundle.
Most cozy
Playing Dungeons & Dragons means a lot of sitting around, so why not stay cosy while you roll those bones? This blanket is perfect for draping over your shoulders or lap at the table, not to mention across the sofa when you're chilling out away from a world of wizards. It ranks very well in terms of user reviews too (83% of people on Amazon gave it a full five stars), so you can't go far wrong here.
Best homeware
Want to make things more comfortable during those afternoon-long DnD marathons? These official pillows and cushions should restore your metaphorical hit dice. There are plenty of great designs on the official DnD Amazon page, but my favorites would be the class ones (thanks to their strong contrasts yet simple aesthetic, like the Fighter version) or this D20 that's made up of countless DnD icons.
Best decoration
One way to increase atmosphere is to add lighting into your setup, and this simple ornament is a simple way of giving your play area a cozy vibe. This official, color-changing merch from Paladone (who have a reputation for high-quality collectibles) can be transported easily enough thanks to its smaller size, and it's got plenty of positive reviews to its name.
Best DnD gifts FAQ
What to buy for someone who likes DnD?
If you're wondering what you should get someone who loves Dungeons & Dragons, I'd recommend starting with dice. Yes, I know what you're thinking. Surely they already have those? Well, as a player and Dungeon Master that runs games on the regular, I can safely say that there's always room for more... Particularly if you're buying unique designs from creators on Etsy. Some of my most treasured dice have tiny ducks embedded in them for example.
Character or session journals are also a solid choice. Much like dice, these will come in useful at some stage - be it the current campaign or one in the future. The recipient is unlikely to have the exact design you've chosen, either.
Failing all this, grab some novelty chocolates or sweets in the shape of dice. These are fairly easy to find online and make for a simple yet thoughtful present.
Should you buy DnD rulebooks as a gift?
I'd always recommend proceeding with caution when buying DnD rulebooks as a gift. Yes, there's a chance that the recipient might already have the book you're considering. But it can also be a minefield if you don't know the difference between various editions or versions (which is entirely fair, it can be a headache to detangle even if you're an experienced fan). There are new 2024 core rulebooks out this year, for instance, making the old ones redundant.
As such, I'd only buy DnD rulebooks if the person you're shopping for has asked for it specifically - or you know exactly what they need.
Is DnD an expensive hobby?
The answer to whether DnD is expensive or not depends on how deep down the rabbit hole you're willing to go. Many players and Dungeon Masters make do with dice, paper, and their imaginations. Others go all in with expensive 3D miniatures and terrain, not to mention lighting and sound effects. Neither is the 'right' way to play; you can spend as much or as little as you want on DnD and still have a wonderful time.
With that in mind, DnD gifts don't have to break the bank. There are plenty of cheap options available, be it mugs or custom models.
