Cyberpunk 2077 will get a free upgrade for next-gen consoles at launch. PS4 and Xbox One owners of the game will get a "more robust" update for the PS5 and Xbox Series X, CD Projekt Red has confirmed.

The first Night City Wire stream clarifies that both consoles will get the upgrade. "Earlier in the year we announced that if you pick up Cyberpunk 2077 on Xbox One you'll be able to play it on Xbox Series X when the console launches," the stream states. "If you pick up Cyberpunk 2077 on PS4, you'll also be able to play it on PS5 when the console launches. And that's not all. There will be a free upgrade for Xbox Series X and PS5, but we'll have more details on that soon."

The next-gen version of the game was previously discussed during a conference callwith investors. The studio answered a question about the game running on next-gen consoles with, "At some point we're gonna have a more robust update for the next-gens, which we're planning to give free of charge to anybody who purchases PS4 or Xbox One versions."

The call appears to have taken place to address the news that Cyberpunk 2077 has been delayed again from September 17 to November 19. CD Projekt said in a statement yesterday that the decision to delay the game is a result of needing more time to go through all of the game's complex systems and fix a lot of bugs to make sure the game is the best it can be at launch.

When asked whether the delay will affect the projected release of the next-gen version in 2021, the studio said they don't know when the patch will launch,"We're sure that it will be delivered next year, but it was not internally planned for a certain day. So, it's hard to say about the potential delay of the next-gen [version]."

We think getting a free next-gen update of the game makes it even more important to nail down a Cyberpunk 2077 pre-order right now - that's value right there.

I started out writing for the games section of a student-run website as an undergrad, and continued to write about games in my free time during retail and temp jobs for a number of years. Eventually, I earned an MA in magazine journalism at Cardiff University, and soon after got my first official role in the industry as a content editor for Stuff magazine. After writing about all things tech and games-related, I then did a brief stint as a freelancer before I landed my role as a staff writer here at 12DOVE. Now I get to write features, previews, and reviews, and when I'm not doing that, you can usually find me lost in any one of the Dragon Age or Mass Effect games, tucking into another delightful indie, or drinking far too much tea for my own good.
