In a weekend of new about long dormant franchises showing life again ( Roger Rabbit , Men In Black ) the news that a Blair Witch revival is also a possibility should come as no surprise.
Eduardo Sánchez, director of the original, has told The Toronto Star that he and Blair Witch Project co-creator Daniel Myrick are seriously thinking about making a sequel, once again sharing writing and directing. They'd pick up from where the original left off, pretending Blair Witch 2 - with which they had no involvement - never happened. The duo recently went on a drive through their original Blair Witch haunts, about a half hour from Sánchez's Maryland home, looking for inspiration. The new treatment has roles for original cast members Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard and Michael C Williams, though they wouldn't be the stars.
"We're at the step where we're about to pitch to Lionsgate, which owns the movie rights now," says Sánchez. "It's pretty much up to them. They can completely squash it or greenlight it."
As for the style of the film, it may not a return to the 100% shaky-cam of the original, as Sánchez thinks the technique is becoming a bit of a joke. According to the interview Sánchez "laughed when he saw Cloverfield, another Blair Witch wannabe, and the characters never dropped their video camera even when being chased by a Godzilla-like monster," but was more impressed with District 9's approach, saying it's nearest to what he has in mind for Blair Witch 3, which he's calling "mixed first person".
