Confirmed at last: OutRun 2 Xbox-bound this year

As expected, Sega have confirmed that they will be releasing a console version of OutRun 2 - and it'll be an Xbox exclusive. The coin-op conversion will make its debut at E3, which takes place from 12-14 May, and will be released towards the end of the year.

The game - the sequel to 1986's seminal arcade racer - is currently being ported by Sumo Digital Ltd (which has its roots in Actua Soccer coders Gremlin Interactive) and will feature a number of 'enhanced' modes. These will include Xbox Live support for up to four players as well as a new mission-based single-player mode and a number of unlockable elements.

OutRun 2 - which finally hit arcades earlier this year - was long-rumoured to be Xbox-bound, not least because the coin-op original was based on the Chihiro arcade board, which utilises Xbox hardware. We'll have a full hands-on report on the game from E3 in a couple of weeks' time.

The Xbox version of OutRun 2 will be released towards the end of 2004
