Captain Marvel enlists two female screenwriters

As the press blitz of all things Avengers-related goes into overdrive, talk has turned to another of Marvel’s up-and-coming movies in its vast cinematic universe. Captain Marvel, aka Carol Danvers, is getting her own standalone film set for release in 2018 with two screenwriters now on the studio’s wishlist to pen the script.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Guardians Of The Galaxy co-writer Nicole Perlman and Inside Out scribe Meg LeFauve are in talks to write the forthcoming superhero outing. They have both already penned scripts and are thought to be combining their efforts after landing the all-important thumbs up from Marvel creative chief Kevin Feige.

At this point in development there’s still no director attached to bring the material to life or indeed an actress cast in the lead role. This negates earlier rumors suggesting that Marvel had found the perfect person to play the part, with the intention of her shooting a brief cameo for Age Of Ultron. While that was the studio’s original intention, Feige made mention to MTV about the decision to remove her from the movie: “We didn’t want to introduce her fully-formed, flying in a costume before you got to know who she was and how she came to be.”

In the comics, Danvers is an Air Force pilot whose genetic material becomes meshed with that of a Kree alien (the same race as Ronan the Accuser in Guardians) and as a result she’s gifted with several superhuman abilities.

Captain Marvel opens on July 6, 2018.
