Capcom producer interested in Onimusha resurrection
Yoshinori Ono has some new ideas for the franchise, but is it too late?
It's been over five years since an Onimusha game last saw light on a major system, but according to Capcom producer Yoshinori Ono, now may be the right time to resurrect the hack-and-slash franchise for the current console generation.
In an interview with IGN, Ono admitted that a new Onimusha game was well past due for the Xbox 360 and PS3, but that if it were to happen, Capcom would need to expand the franchise into new territory, stating, “I think it might be time to progress beyond the standard single-player adventure. There should be ways to expand upon what we've done while involving the community more. Perhaps implement some sort of multiplayer into a game like that.”
Although he's yet to approach Capcom about a new Onimusha, Ono revealed that he has many ideas for the franchise, saying, “When I feel good about them and I feel we can do something, I will most certainly take them in for approval with the higher-ups. It's something I'm very interested in doing."
The first Onimusha game, Onimusha: Warlords, was released for PlayStation 2 back in 2001. Its success gave way to sequels and spin-offs for Xbox, PS2 and Game Boy Advance, ending with Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams for the PS2 in 2006. Is five years too long to be out of the game or can a fresh Onimusha offer something new to the genre?
