Can you recognise these Street Fighter characters just from their colours?
If you’ve got this far, the answer is a probably a powerfully muscled ‘yes!’. But just in case you were in any doubt, check out the image below and test your World Warrior knowledge.
Did you get them all? Of course you did. You’re awesome. You don’t even need the answers.
It’s the work of minimalist artist (and maximalist gamer) Ashley Browning. As well as being cool pieces of art in their own right, they hammer home how wonderfully designed Capcom’s original Street Fighter characters are. Perhaps I’ve been playing Street Fighter too long - that would explain my concerning obsession with Guile’s suplex - but I can’t see blue, brown and white without thinking of Chunners. I no longer recognise orange-and-lime Tic Tacs - instead, I see bits of Blanka in a tiny plastic box. Let's move on.
It’s a testament to how much time and effort went into the character designs of Street Fighter, and you can discover more about the game's fascinating history here (including all the troubling details of Akira Yasuda’s leg obsession. I'm not even joking).
There's more of Browning’s videogame art here, and his Flickr page is worth a look, too. And, if you want to display your love of minimalist 2D brawler art more openly, you can even grab yourself a t-shirt. Perfect.
