Bryan Cranston is totally up to play Mr. Sinister in an X-Men movie

A lot of actors are asked about which comic book characters they'd like to play - this is the golden age of comic book movies, after all. Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston is no stranger to the question, previously tossing his hat in the ring for the role of Batman v Superman's Lex Luthor and the upcoming DCEU role of Commissioner Gordon. He turned both down, however, on account of there being too many existing versions of those characters. If it were up to Cranston, he'd play a character yet to appear onscreen.

"Lex Luthor, there’s been a lot of that," he tells Greg Grunberg during an episode of AMC's Geeking Out. "I’ve been asked to take a look at Commissioner Gordon. It’s like, I would be one in several and I would kind of like to carve out a new identity. Mister Sinister has always been someone…that would be very cool."

This is the second time Cranston has expressed an interest in playing Mr. Sinister. Now that we've heard the character is appearing in an upcoming X-Men flick, there might be a chance he scores the role. Bryan Singer confirmed on the X-Men: Apocalypse commentary that the nefarious baddie, aka Nathaniel Essex, is scheduled to appear in The Wolverine 3.

Seeing as how Wolvie's trilogy-closer wrapped last month, and we've seen no sneaky set pics of Cranston, it's possible someone else has beaten him to the punch. Someone like... Richard E. Grant perhaps? I wouldn't bet on that though; Wolvie 3 director James Mangold hit up Twitter after Singer's "reveal" hit the web to shoot down the rumors.

Directed by James Mangold and starring Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, and Boyd Holbrook, Richard E. Grant, and Elizabeth Rodriguez, Wolverine 3 will be released in cinemas on March 3, 2017.
