Blazing Angels 2 - first look
Welcome to World War II 1/2
To those who finished the original's campaign mode, this sci-fi mentality will seem familiar - the end of the first Blazing Angels did give you a few jet fighters to test drive. The sequel, however, is taking "What if?" to the extreme.
Equally bizarre as the planes and weapons are the missions you'll use them in. Countless war games have asked you to shoot down parachuting infantrymen, but in one climactic scene of Blazing Angels 2, you'll have to shoot down parachuting tanks. No, we don't understand the physics of that either. The boss battle we witnessed, meanwhile, wasn't with the expected aircraft carrier or ace pilot. It was with a screen-swallowing Zeppelin blimp. Even the locations are exotically inaccurate - Rome, China, Switzerland, the Himalayas and San Francisco, to name a few. Yes, World War II now conveniently drops by the scenic Golden Gate Bridge.
As if all that weren't enough, the developers are rewriting power-ups into history too. Extra speed, extra firepower, extended range, regeneration and other enhancers will be found hovering in the skies. If only our grandfathers and great-grandfathers had had such things at their disposal... we could have wrapped up the real war in a few short months.
Blazing Angels 2: Secret Missions of WWII is set for release on Xbox 360, PS3and PC this August. Check out our interview with the game's designer by hitting the Movies tab above.
