Black Friday PS5 SSD and hard drive deals 2024: early PS5 SSD discounts available now

Black Friday PS5 SSD deals are here to help you expand your console's storage. The brand-spanking new PS5 Pro may sport a larger 2TB SSD, but that's a slightly strange upgrade to spend all that money on when one of the console's best traits has always been that you can boost its internal storage anyway. Giving a boost to the measly 825GB SSD of the launch model PS5 is always a valid alternative. With one of the deals we find you this month, you can get an extra one or two terabytes for much cheaper than if you were to upgrade.

Black Friday gaming deals are always worth checking out even before November 29th, as we see so many great bits of hardware come down in price, and physical games tend to run cheap too. In 2024, PS5 SSDs have been pricier than we'd like them to be, and that's mainly down to the fact that they were so affordable up until Black Friday last year. I could bore you with reasons as to why prices have fluctuated, but what I'll tell you instead is that Black Friday looks to be the point in 2024 where all the best drives could finally drop in price. There are never any guarantees, but let's get you prepared with what you should know so you're armed with the knowledge to buy when the time comes.

We'd expect even the best SSDs for PS5 to go on offer, but there's always the external hard drives, portable SSDs, and other accessories to think about too. While you can't run games straight from external drives like the Samsung T9 2TB variant of the Buffalo External 4TB SSD, they've already seen discounts on the lead-up to Black Friday. Their hefty storage space can also help put an end to the constant need to delete your PS5 library to make room for new games and PS Plus Premium releases.

Hopefully from the list of deals from last year that we've saved, you'll be able to tell which device is for you, and how much you should potentially budget.

Black Friday PS5 SSD deals: What to expect this year

After a year of tough prices to stomach, Black Friday holds a lot of promise for some genuine PS5 SSD discounts. What's more, as the Gen 4 SSD interface begins to age, and more Gen 5 offerings enter the PC market, we'd hope that prices will naturally begin to fall anyway.

Either way, since PS5 SSDS with integrated heatsinks can usually cost more than drives with no cooling, Black Friday could help save you some money, at least bringing the costs down to levels we were familiar with in 2023. Still, buying a heatsink separately might be a better way to go, depending on the drive you're aiming to buy.

We'd expect the big hitters to go on sale during Black Friday this year. The WD Black SN850X is a prime contender, as is the Seagate FireCuda 530 if the stock can hold steady for long enough, and the Samsung 990 Pro should be one to watch during big deals events like Black Friday. Also entering the upper echelon of Gen 4 drives this year has been the Corsair MP600 Elite, which we'd recommend highly. We've actually already begun to see discounts on this drive, which bodes well going into November.

Of course, budget brands like Nextorage, Fanxiang, and even SK Hynix will have discounts for their drives too, and you can usually find these at Amazon, and Newegg.

With the PS5 Pro finally out, folks who aren't up for the $700 upgrade might look to instead grab a storage boost. Black Friday SSD deals will no doubt be perfect for that, and 2TB and 4TB drives are always much cheaper during these times.

Black Friday PS5 SSD and hard drive deals: FAQs

When will Black Friday PS5 SSD deals start?

Black Friday officially begins on Friday, November 29 this month. That may seem later than usual for Black Friday, but that just means you have more reason to make use of the deals for some early Christmas shopping. Keep in mind though, that early bird offers appear earlier every year. We'd recommend that you keep your eye out for offers from October onward, and as soon as the deals start coming in, we'll be listing them on this page.

Where will the best Black Friday SSD deals be?

If you're looking for a new PS5 SSD during November 2024 then you'll likely find that all major tech retailers are offering amazing discounts on them. If we had to guess though, we'd place our best on the retailers below.

BestBuy: Discounts on SSDs exclusive to BestBuy
Walmart: Deals on internal and portable SSDs of different sizes
Newegg: Money off of big brands like WD_Black

UK Retailers:

OverClockersUK: Sales on top brands like Seagate and WD
eBuyer: Discounts on a range of internal and external SSDs

What SSD should you buy for PS5?

Verbatim Vi7000G PS5 SSD being held in front of a PS5

(Image credit: Future / Duncan Robertson)

We feel confident saying that there definitely will be something for everyone in this year's Black Friday PS5 SSD deals. There are big brands that are well-established, but the great thing about the SSD market is that you don't need to go with a bigger brand to get amazing read and write speeds. Verbatim is a slightly lesser-known brand these days, but it came out with the Vi7000G this year, and it's easily one of the best-value PS5 SSDs money can buy.

The internal PS5 SSD market is likely to be an exciting one thanks to prices slowly coming down in the last year. Deal prices will most likely take amazing drives to historically low prices as manufacturers like Seagate and WD try to offset a troubling year. Internal drives such as the WD Black SN850 and Gigabyte's AORUS 7000s are beginning to get older, so that makes them good candidates for the first, big price cuts to look for.

One tip for Black Friday is to look for SSDs without a heatsink, as these are often more heavily discounted than the ones designed for use in the PS5. It's so easy to get your hands on a great PS5 heatsink on the cheap, and even getting these things separately can save you money sometimes.

The Samsung 980 PRO 1TB is a great bet for a "lowest ever price" in this year's Black Friday PS5 SSD deals - across all of its capacities. It's been on the scene for a bit longer now and has already seen its 'normal' price settle at a lower level. With the 990 Pro being a more established contender now too, we could see some excellent discounts to Samsung's range.

Whatever internal model you have your eyes on, remember it will still have to meet Sony's criteria and recommended specs. Here they are again for convenience:

  • PCIe Gen4 interface
  • 250GB - 4TB capacity
  • 5,500MB/s read speed or faster
  • 22mm width (do not go for 25mm units)
  • Heatsink required (built-in or DIY)

When it comes to the best PS5 external hard drives, you have plenty of options. HDD will be the cheap and cheerful form of storage it always is, but if you want to store more PS5 games on an external drive, a portable SSD is what you'll need. This year, the WD Black P40 has emerged as the best external hard drive we've seen, but you don't need to go that pricey for solid read/write speeds.

Older external SSDs might be the ones to watch. The perenially popular Samsung T5 is getting harder to find these days, but the T7 Shield is taking its place. While it, too, has been out for a while and its regular price point is decent, it could be prone to price cuts this Black Friday. The WD P10 SSD (5TB) is also one we'd keep a close eye on. At the time of writing, it's on sale at Amazon in the US for only $110, so that bodes very well for external prices come Black Friday.

And remember, there'll be great discounts off loads of PS5 external HDDs too: from long-time favorites like WD's My Passport to Seagate's licensed hard drive companions for PS4 and Xbox One. Even value drives like Toshiba's Canvio Advance range to premium, large-scale expansions like Seagate's desktop big boys will see reductions as HDD continues to get cheaper.

With this deal, the 1TB model is even lower too, offering 1TB of storage for less than $60!

Crucial X9 Pro 1TB$77.29$59.99 at AmazonSave $17

Crucial X9 Pro 1TB | $77.29 $59.99 at Amazon
Save $17 - The Crucial X9 and X10 Pro perform brilliantly for the money, and here you can get a zippy portable SSD for the same price as an internal one - which shouldn't be a good deal, but it somehow is in today's economy. Either way, this could be a great way for content creators to transfer videos and screenshots from the console to a PC, or to just store more PS4 and PS5 games.

Buy it if:

✅ You want a portable SSD
✅ You need to transfer media off the console quickly

Don't buy it if:

❌ You are just looking for more game storage space - an internal drive is better for that.

XPG Gammix S70 Blade 1TB$59.99 at Amazon

XPG Gammix S70 Blade 1TB | $59.99 at Amazon
This isn't technically discounted, but PS5 SSD deals are a little weaker than expected this week, and XPG's option here has been consistently reasonably priced, and seems to be at a new low for now - perfect for Black Friday then. This is super underrated, so it's worth considering if you don't need the absolute last word in speeds.

Buy it if:

✅ You want a heatsink pre-attached
✅ You want great speeds for the money

Don't buy it if:

❌ You'd rather have a newer drive

WD Black SN770 1TB | $129.99 $64.99 at Best Buy
Save $65 - While this SSD is never as expensive as $130, a discounted price of $65 is a great deal. It may not be the latest and best drive out there, but it's still decent. Definitely worth considering if you're on a budget.

Buy it if:

✅ You don't mind a slightly older Gen 4 drive
✅ You are on a budget but don't mind buying a heatsink separately.

Don't buy it if:

❌ You want the fastest sequential speeds in the category.

Save $39 - Certainly one of the most popular SSDs on the market, the Seagate Firecuda 530 1TB is currently on offer for the first time in a while. This gets you one of the fastest Gen 4 NVMe drives available for under $80. We'd like to see it a bit lower, but since we haven't seen it in stock or on sale very often lately, this is worth knowing about.

Buy it if:

✅ You want a top-notch Gen 4 drive
✅ You get a heatsink separately

Don't buy it if:

❌ You only need an external drive

✅ You want something for PS5 or PC

Don't buy it if:

❌ You don't care about speeds and just want more space

If you want an SSD with a heatsink already attached, you can grab this Samsung 980 pro with a $40 saving at the moment. This drive's price has dropped since the 990 Pro came out, but in terms of SSDs with heatsinks, you won't find much better value than this.

Buy it if:

✅ You want a heatsink pre-attached
✅ You want minimal loading and transfer times

Don't buy it if:

❌ You'd rather have the newer 990 Pro

Samsung 990 Pro 1TB$169.99$79.99 at AmazonSave $90

Samsung 990 Pro 1TB | $169.99 $79.99 at Amazon
Save $90 - The 2TB version of this great Samsung SSD had a great deal that's unfortunately now out of stock, but its smaller 1TB variant is still available at a decent price. Kingston Fury Renegade 2TB$221.99$112.99 at AmazonSave $109

Kingston Fury Renegade 2TB | $221.99 $112.99 at Amazon
Save $109 - This is the lowest price we've ever seen the 2TB Kingston Fury Renegade come down to in the US, and for a drive that is constantly touted for its great value, that's a fantastic thing. Annoyingly, this isn't the heatsink model, so you'd need to buy that separately, but either way, this is a fantastic way to futureproof yourself with loads of space for games.

Buy it if:

✅ You want 2TB for as cheap as they come
✅ You want underrated performance

Don't buy it if:

❌ You want to avoid buying a heatsink separately

Samsung T7 Shield External SSD 2TB | $159.99 $119.99 at Best Buy
Save $40 - If it's an external SSD you seek, the T7 Shield is a good one to buy this deals season. The T9 has just been released, so it's likely we'll see this cheaper later in the month, but even so, this is on par with what you'd pay for an internal 2TB drive from Samsung, and annoyingly it doesn't get a lot better than that.

Buy it if:

✅ You want decent external SSD speeds
✅ You want something physically durable

Don't buy it if:

❌ You can afford the newer T9

WD Black SN770 1TB | £50.99 at Amazon

You can usually find all sizes of this one on sale, and even though this listing from Amazon isn't technically discounted, it is cheaper than competing retailers who say it's "on sale" at higher prices than this. Such is the world of SSD prices at the moment.

Buy it if:

✅ You don't mind a slightly older Gen 4 drive
✅ You are on a budget

Don't buy it if:

Buy it if:

✅ You want decent read and write speeds
✅ You want a heatsink pre-attached

Don't buy it if:

❌ You would rather have the newer 990 Pro

...Ok, second's up. Buy it if:

✅ You want 2TB for as cheap as they come
✅ You want underrated performance

Don't buy it if:

❌ You don't need 2TB - although the extra headroom is worth the little extra here.

Ever since playing Journey at the age of 15, I’ve been desperate to cover video games for a living. After graduating from Edinburgh Napier University with a degree in Journalism, I contributed to the Scottish Games Network and completed an Editorial Internship over at Expert Reviews. Besides that, I’ve been managing my own YouTube channel and Podcast for the last 7 years. It’s been a long road, but all that experience somehow landed me a dream job covering gaming hardware. I’m a self-confessing PlayStation fanboy, but my experience covering the larger business and developer side of the whole industry has given me a strong knowledge of all platforms. When I’m not testing out every peripheral I can get my hands on, I’m probably either playing tennis or dissecting game design for an upcoming video essay. Now, I better stop myself here before I get talking about my favourite games like HUNT: Showdown, Dishonored, and Towerfall Ascension. Location: UK Remote
