Before looks gorgeous, even if we're not sure how to play it
Going prehistoric
Facepunch Studios wants to take us all back to a simpler time with their newest game Before, and in more ways than one. Using a simple and smooth art style that more closely mimics claymation than a hyper-realistic blockbuster, it puts you in the crudely made sandals of a prehistoric tribe. The game's teaser suggests (between sweeping shots of simple but beautifully rendered landscapes) that it will focus on the survival of your nomadic group. That falls in line with the information available on the game's official site, which says that between building shelter and fighting off predators, your goal is simple: survive, and prosper.
How exactly you'll go about that is a mystery for now. Some shots from the teaser suggest a top-down structure, others appear to show a more hands-on approach. Will you be directing the entire tribe as a god ala Black and White, or will you be a leader among your tiny clay-like people, guiding them to a bright future? We can't answer that quite yet, and there's no release date for now, but I'm sure we'll learn about both BEFORE too long. See what I did there? Ha, haha
