Why you can trust 12DOVE
Not a re-release for Woody Allen’s comedy but a documentary recounting the class-action suit launched by a dozen Nicaraguan banana plantation workers against multi-national corporation Dole Food.
In this David-vs-Goliath battle, the plaintiffs argue that Dole’s use of pesticide DBCP has left them sterile.
Drawing on vivid archive footage of working conditions in rural Nicaragua, director Fredrik Gertten also benefits from a charismatic protag in Juan Dominguez, the Ferrari-driving lawyer representing the underdogs.
A pity, though, that the film can’t incorporate ongoing case developments, including fraud charges levelled against Dominguez.
