Baldur's Gate 3 is making its way to all manner of consoles, with PS5, PC and Xbox all ticked off at time of writing - and will there be more in the future? After a string of GOTY awards and widely considered by many to be one of the best RPGs in years, BG3 started solely on PC, but Larian has since made a concerted effort to bring it across to all manner of consoles since then. If you want to know if Baldur's Gate 3 is on PlayStation, Xbox or Switch, I'll answer those questions below,
Is Baldur's Gate 3 on PS5, Xbox and Switch?
Baldur's Gate 3 is currently on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, with currently no plans to port it to the previous gen Xbox One or PS4. The most recent port was the Xbox Series X/S, announced and released simultaneously on 7 December 2023 in tandem with BG3 winning Game of the Year at the Future Game Awards.
However, it's important to note that all these versions are largely the same with the exception of the Xbox Series S version, which does not have co-op splitscreen. Part of the delay has come from the fact that Microsoft initially wanted console parity on all their games, but BG3 was simply too big and powerful a game to run on the Series S with splitscreen in play. In a Reddit Post, a representative for Larian Studios explained that a Baldur's Gate 3 port for Xbox had been experimented with and "been in the works for some time", but technical issues had been a problem, with the studio "not yet confident enough to announce it". Still - better late than never!
When it comes to the PS4 and Xbox One, it's also a matter of technical issues, as Larian said in an interview with Eurogamer: "I don't think that current-gen consoles would be able to run it. There's a lot of technical upgrades and updates that we did to our engine, and I don't know if it would be capable of being able to actually run on those things. Maybe it could run, but then we would have to tone down the textures and this and that and it wouldn't look as cool anymore."
Given the talk of technical issues on current-gen tech, that does suggest a Nintendo Switch version is extremely unlikely too, though we'll update this page if we hear anything different.
