BAFTA 2017 winners: It’s trophy time for Fantastic Beasts and Spider-Man: Homecoming’s Tom Holland

The Golden Globes have been and gone, now it’s time for its British award-giving cousin BAFTA to hand out a host of shiny trophies to those deserving of something slightly more than a pat on the back for a job well done. The full list of winners for 2017 are below, but here are some of the highlights:

La La Land got its fair share of awards (again) on the route to probable Oscar glory. The film won Best Film, Best Director, Best Original Music (natch), Best Cinematography and Emma Stone got the nod for Best Leading Actress. Not a bad evening, then!

Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, though, bested La La Land in the Production Design category and took home the award in that category and, in a slight shocker, Fantastic Beasts, Arrival, Doctor Strange and Star Wars: Rogue One all lost out to The Jungle Book in the Special Visual Effects category.

The public had their say, too. Tom Holland was awarded the Rising Star award (as voted for by the general public) and, with a little-known movie by the name of Spider-Man: Homecoming just around the corner you’d think his star would continue to rise.

I'm the Senior Entertainment Writer here at 12DOVE, focusing on news, features, and interviews with some of the biggest names in film and TV. On-site, you'll find me marveling at Marvel and providing analysis and room temperature takes on the newest films, Star Wars and, of course, anime. Outside of GR, I love getting lost in a good 100-hour JRPG, Warzone, and kicking back on the (virtual) field with Football Manager. My work has also been featured in OPM, FourFourTwo, and Game Revolution.
