Bad Santa 2 snaps up Mean Girls director Mark Waters

It's been 12 years since Bad Santa hit the big screen, but that hasn't dulled the appetite for a sequel to Billy Bob Thornton's holiday comedy. Last week we learned that Bad Santa 2 will begin filming in January, and today comes news that the production has found its director.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mean Girls and Freaky Friday filmmaker, Mark Waters has been tapped to direct the follow-up to the 2003 hit, which grossed $76.5 million worldwide and has gone on to become a cult festive film. In addition, both Tony Cox and Brett Kelly are set to reprise their roles as Marcus and Thurman Merman respectively, with producers currently looking for a female lead.

This is great news for fans of the original, and with Entourage screenwriter Doug Ellin confirming that the sequel will maintain the R-rated tone set by the first instalment, the return of Thornton's drunken thief could offer more festive delights. Bad Santa 2 is slated to arrive in UK and US cinemas just in time for Christmas in 2016.
