Avatar still king of the box office
But who were the other movers and shakers?
Another week, another raft of new releases.
But there’s still only one king of the box office. Yep, like James Cameron’s Titanic (the film, not the ship), Avatar is proving itself to be damn near unsinkable.
The 3D epic continues to take the world by storm, having been number one both sides of the pond all of six weeks. And it’s almost overtaken Titanic as the biggest-selling film ever at the worldwide box office, having grabbed $1.841bn.
It has now officially knocked The Dark Knight off the second place spot. You can bet Cameron’s celebrating somewhere.
If you’re interested, Fox International co-presidents Paul Hanneman and Tomas Jegeus said:
“Having been a part of the Titanic phenomenon, we never thought this day would come in our careers.
But James Cameron created in Avatar a film with such humanity and magic that it resonates with people of every culture.”

No kidding. But who else is in the running this week? Well Paul Bettany’s hellish action pic Legion scared up $18.2m Stateside, taking second place at the BO, while The Rock’s Tooth Fairy dodged scathing reviews to take a neat $14.5m.
