The 55-year-old is set to play Dr. Storm, father of ‘Invisible Woman’ Sue Storm (Kate Mara) and ‘Human Torch’ Johnny Storm (Michael B. Jordan).
Cathey has already previously worked alongside Mara in House Of Cards , as well as Jordan, who got his start in The Wire .
Plot details for the hotly-anticipated reboot are currently under wraps, but the new version is expected to be more 'grounded' than the previous family-friendly adaptations.
The cast also includes Miles Teller and Jamie Bell (who make up the titular foursome) and Toby Kebbell, who plays antagonist Doctor Doom.
Shooting is currently underway in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The film will open in the UK on 18 June 2015.
