The first trailer has appeared online for The Intern, Nancy Meyers’ new film in which Robert De Niro’s 70-year-old widower joins a newly devised “senior intern” programme at Anne Hathaway’s online fashion website.
Initially, Hathaway’s high-flyer is baffled and irritated by the sudden introduction of a pensionable old geezer into her hip young workforce, but De Niro’s work ethic and old-fashioned values soon have her won round. So much so, that she even begins to describe him as her “best friend”…

While the set-up may stretch credulity somewhat, it does at least make for an interesting twist on the usual rom-com dynamic. Indeed, there doesn’t appear to be very much “rom” in this one at all, which is probably for the best, given the respective ages of its two leads…
Directed by Meyers and co-starring Rene Russo, Anders Holm and Andrew Rannells, The Intern will open in the US on 25 September 2015 and the UK on 2 October 2015.
