Angelina Jolie stars opposite her daughter in new Maleficent image
Says the film explores “what turns people evil?”
A new image has arrived from Disney’s Maleficent , featuring Angelina Jolie acting opposite her off-screen daughter, Vivienne.
The new image ran as part of a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly , in which Jolie describes the film as an exploration of the nature of evil…
“The exercise wasn’t, ‘How can we have fun with a villain?’” Jolie says. “It was, ‘What turns people evil and vile and aggressive and cruel? What could have possibly happened to her?’”
“When that character makes mistakes - which Maleficent does, and crosses many lines - you want them to be angry at her and concerned and confused and in the end, somehow understand something that they didn’t know before.”
And as for her daughter’s involvement, Jolie says her appearance was borne out of necessity rather than any great desire to get her on screen.
“[ Brad and I ] think it’s fun for our kids to have cameos and join us on set, but not to be actors,” says Jolie. “But the other 3- and 4-year-olds wouldn’t come near me. It had to be a child that liked me and wasn’t afraid of my horns and my eyes and my claws. So it had to be Viv.”
Directed by Robert Stromberg and co-starring Elle Fanning, Sharlto Copley and Juno Temple, Maleficent will open in the UK on 30 May 2014.
